The Jacksonville Jaguars have placed quarterback Trevor Lawrence on injured reserve, likely ending his 2024 season. Lawrence suffered a concussion during Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans, following a controversial hit by linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair. This hit, which took place after Lawrence had slid at the end of a scramble, left him with his helmet hitting the turf forcefully. The tackle led to an ejection for Al-Shaair, who was penalized for an illegal hit to the head and neck area. As Lawrence lay on the field, he appeared to exhibit “fencing posture,” a sign of a brain injury, prompting immediate medical attention. He was later carted off and ruled out for the rest of the game.
The concussion marks Lawrence’s second diagnosed concussion with the Jaguars and his third known concussion, including one during his time at Clemson. Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson initially stated that Lawrence was in concussion protocol and reassured that Lawrence would “be fine.” However, the status of his prior injury, a left AC joint sprain suffered in Week 9, would factor into decisions regarding his future. Given the injury and Lawrence’s history, the Jaguars opted to place him on IR, officially ruling him out for at least four games. With only five games left in the season, including matchups with the Titans, Jets, Raiders, and Colts, it’s unlikely Lawrence will return unless he fully recovers, especially if he opts for surgery on his left shoulder, a possibility he mentioned last week.
The Jaguars’ season, which started with high expectations, has been marred by injuries, underperformance, and setbacks, including a poor defensive record. With Lawrence out, backup quarterback Mac Jones is expected to start for the remainder of the season. Jones, who struggled in previous starts, showed improvement after Lawrence’s injury against the Texans, throwing for 235 yards and two touchdowns. Jacksonville also signed journeyman John Wolford to the practice squad to add depth.
The remainder of the Jaguars’ season will focus on evaluating younger players and maintaining team pride. Tight end Evan Engram emphasized the importance of finishing strong for the team’s pride, despite the disappointment of the season.
