Fantasy Football Week 14: Why You Should Be Cautious with Nick Chubb

Week 14 of fantasy football brings a slew of challenging start/sit decisions, with several prominent players flagged for bust potential. While a “bust” label doesn’t always mean benching them, understanding the context is crucial for optimal roster management. Here’s a detailed look at six players with caution flags this week:

Brock Purdy (QB, 49ers):
Fresh off his worst fantasy performance (2.16 points) with only 94 passing yards, Purdy faces an uphill battle against Chicago’s formidable secondary. Although another week removed from his shoulder injury, Purdy is without key weapons like Christian McCaffrey. The Bears’ secondary, featuring stars like Jaylon Johnson, has allowed just 11 passing touchdowns this season. Expect the 49ers to focus on their ground game, making Purdy a risky choice in single-QB leagues.

Gus Edwards (RB, Chargers):
Despite J.K. Dobbins’ absence in Week 13, Edwards failed to capitalize, splitting carries with teammates and managing just 32 rushing yards. Facing a Kansas City defense that stifles opposing RBs (only one RB surpassing 15 points this year), Edwards’ inconsistent usage and poor matchup make him a boom-or-bust play with the latter being more likely.

Nick Chubb (RB, Browns):
Returning from a devastating 2023 knee injury, Chubb hasn’t regained his form, averaging career-low metrics across multiple categories. Sharing snaps with Jerome Ford, Chubb faces a tough Steelers defense allowing only 4.1 yards per carry and ranking top 10 in limiting RB fantasy points. Given Chubb’s inefficiency and declining workload, he’s better left benched if alternatives are available.

DK Metcalf (WR, Seahawks):
Metcalf’s career struggles against the Cardinals (never exceeding 59 yards in 10 games) coupled with a nagging shoulder injury make this a challenging matchup. Arizona’s secondary has been solid, allowing the NFL’s fewest WR touchdowns since Week 7. While Metcalf is hard to bench, expectations for this week should be tempered.

Adam Thielen (WR, Panthers):
After an impressive Week 13, Thielen faces rookie Eagles slot corner Cooper DeJean, who’s been dominant since Week 6. DeJean’s ability to limit WR production makes Thielen’s breakout repeat unlikely, though rostering alternatives will depend on your team depth.

Evan Engram (TE, Jaguars):
With Trevor Lawrence sidelined, Jacksonville’s passing attack takes a hit under Mac Jones. Facing a Tennessee defense tough on tight ends, Engram’s volume may sustain some value, but his ceiling is capped in this tough matchup.

Fantasy managers should tread carefully with these players, considering matchups, health, and team situations.
